Heleen van Ommen

Heleen van Ommen, MD, PhD is associate professor of pediatric hematology and head of the department of pediatric hematology & oncology of the Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

She graduated in medicine at the University of Leiden and completed her pediatrics training and clinical fellowship pediatric hematology at Emma Children’s Hospital AMC in Amsterdam. Her PhD thesis was on epidemiology, risk factors and outcome of venous thromboembolism in childhood.
After a research fellowship in hemostasis and thrombosis in the Henderson Research Centre in Hamilton, Canada, she joined the pediatric hematology department of the Emma Children’s Hospital AMC in 2004, and moved to Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital in 2015.

Her research focuses on pediatric thrombosis and hemostatic complications in pediatric ECMO patients. She is founder and chair of the International Pediatric Thrombosis Network (IPTN) with more than 100 participating centers in 29 countries. She has served on several (inter)national guideline panels in pediatric and adult VTE, including the pediatric panel for the ASH pediatric VTE guideline.

In addition, she is member of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) Pediatric/Neonatal Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) Task Force for pediatric anticoagulant development and consultant and PI of several pediatric clinical studies of new anticoagulant drugs.
